Basilisks - Colour Scheme Tests by WormsandBones Basilisks - Colour Scheme Tests by WormsandBones
Three more basilisks! With these guys, we wanted to try out some new colour schemes that will possibly go into our 'playbook' of colour schemes available to order... depending on how well they're received. Opinions on which you find most appealing and why most appreciated!

So far we're calling them:
- Sky blue
- Dusk
- Bone & black

Everybody here is available on etsy (any stragglers will be stuffed in our rubbermaid totes and carted off to ComicCon... haha).

As always, these guys are fully articulated with ball joints, so they're infinitely poseable and won't break down over time. Their heads and feet are cast resin from our original sculpts, then hand painted, sealed and assembled with their hand made bodies. Everyone here might well be carnivorous, but they're all vegan friendly in terms of their materials. :D

Each one has a small loop at the base of their tail as well that allows them to be pinned to your shoulder, or bag, or... shower curtain I guess if that's your thing.

Anyway if anyone has any ideas on colour schemes they'd like to see, or think might go over well we'd love to hear them!

I've always preferred darker colour schemes. My first pic would be "Dusk", I love the multi-coloured mane and tail-tip on him! Second would be "Bone & Black", always a classic - and classy - colour combo. For myself, I'd never want a pale blue one, but I have friends who would put that colour scheme at the top of their list!

I'm in the same boat as you; I like the darker colour schemes as a rule. We're definitely keeping dusk for now, and sky blue will stay as well, we're just on the fence about bone and black since it seems like it needs a little something extra to 'finish' it.

I wonder...with the bone-n-black, if some colour-tipping on the ruff and tail-puff would do the trick? Maybe a cobalt blue, to match his eyes? Or perhaps a touch of dark-cherry red?

Faves are the Sky blue and Bone & black ones. The colors are nice together, and they have just the right amount of contrast. The Dusk one is kind of just overall too dark for my tastes. The colors are gorgeous, don't get me wrong, just they're so similar. Those black and purple furs are beautiful, though. If I were to get one, though, I'd want the Bone one or the Blue one. :)

Dusk is definitely an overall dark; its not much on contrast, but its something we don't really have in a set colour scheme. We like contrast (or at least I do, and I bully Bones into making things higher contrast fairly regularly), so we tend to do things with a LOT of contrast.
Blue is almost always a bit hit at any event we do, so it'll likely stick around. Bone n' black may not, simply because its a little bland I think...

The bone and black one reminds me a bit of a penguin, it's super awesome. :D
Wish I would've been able to catch these guys when they were for sale. <3
I've seen some but I'd love to see some orange/honey colored ones that are sort of sunset colors maybe? Not like bright yellow or red, just sort of subtle orange.

Oh man, I didn't even think of penguin but I definitely see it now! Wonder if we should make one even MORE penguin-like, maybe dye a bit of yellow into its throat fur... hrmm!

They went pretty quickly which we weren't really expecting. We did just remake a second dusk (slightly different paint job as always) which I need to put on etsy once I'm finished with DA comment catch-up.

Subtle colours are really hard to come by in quality furs. Since we don't use real fur, and we don't buy in enough quantity to have specific dye lots made just for us we're limited in what we can get our hands on. We do have a REALLY nice sort of burnt-orange with white tips, but its a little too dense for these guys, so we have to save it for larger monsters.

That would be awesome! I love characteristic markings on other species.

I saw that one, I might have to go for it if he's not sold by the time I can get it. <3

That sounds amazing though, I'd love to see that burnt orange on something.

Its one of my favorites for sure! It actually was a personal purchase; I didn't intend to use it for bizniz monsters, but it just went so well with the black and purple... hopefully we can get more though!

Red is definitely a thing... we just have trouble finding successful colours to pair it with. Red and black is a big hit usually, but everything else with red is KINDA a niche it seems.

Well, Red black, white and grey normally makes a good combo usually.

Sky blue is definitely my favourite, always had a soft spot for teal, yellow & white ^_^
Dusk and elegant too.

Its funny, but I've always equated blue with 'creative' people! We took careful records at our cons last year too, and weirdly enough if we had something in a blue scheme, it was almost ALWAYS the first one to sell.
Cheers!

Sky blue is perfect, Bone and Black is a really good one to have because that is always popular, but Dusk feels like it lacks contrast. I can't tell if it's just because of the photos, though... I would recommend maybe changing the eye colour to something that compliments or contrasts the purple better.

Its definitely not a high contrast combo of furs, you're right. I wanted to try something that was a little more subtle, since we have a tendency to go for the high-contrast, eye-catching combos instinctively. Annnnd I'm a horrible photographer. *cough* The ruff fur is actually quite a vibrant blue/purple at its base, but the camera insisted it wasn't, and I don't argue with technology...technology always wins.
We did make a second dusk just yesterday, and I took your suggestion and gave him fairly bright green eyes which looks pretty keen, so thank ye! <3

fav. is dusk. the two colors arn't as stark next to each other. Plus I really like the Mane fur, that seems to pull everthing together and give him a more other worldly apperence. a color combo that nature would would put together ( in said other world) . the other two are cute, but loving dusk.

Cheers! We've had the fur that guy's ruff and tail tip are done in for quite a while now, we just weren't sure what to pair it with. Its hard to see, but its actually got a bit of a pearly sheen to it too which is pretty neat. :)

They're all absolutely adorable, the Sky Blue being my favorite of this lot (I may sneak over to etsy right now to see if it's still available and snatch it up). Although my most favorite basilisk I've seen so far from your posts is definitely the GREY one you just did , I'm still bummed I didn't catch it before it sold (I'm always sleeping when you post on etsy. Perhaps you could list your horrors up at a variety of times if possible so some of us east-coasters have a chance at them also before they sell out, lol!...wait, aren't you east coasters as well?...you two never sleep! =P). Anyways, would love if you added that Grey coloration to your "playbook" for future horrors if possible. Keep up the beautiful work!

Ha, yeah well...guilty as charged: we don't sleep much. I think grey will definitely stay though, given the response its gotten. Dusk may too depending on the quantity of those furs we can get our grubby little mitts on: weird furs like that don't generally get produced for long unfortunately.
We will definitely try and start listing things at different times of day. Unfortunately since we're at work most of the daylight hours, it'll likely only be on weekends this happens. Its too bad there's no 'list at X time' feature on etsy the way you can pre-program a blog post time...

Thanks! That's sort of what I liked about it too. We have a tendency to go for high contrast schemes because they're very eye-catching, so I wanted to try and find something with some of my fav. colours that was subtler.
